Example 2: Implementation and management of an ionizing radiation photonic component manufacturing facility.

OBJECTIVES: As Production Manager at a small optoelectronics company, we were called upon to establish a manufacturing facility for the mass-production of ionizing radiation photonic components to be used in a portable chemical sensor being developed by a large, multi-national, ISO-registered company.

EXECUTION: Working closely with the end customer, we developed and implemented a project plan to meet their performance, cost and delivery requirements. Research and development was carried out to develop the component, which included life testing and failure analysis. In addition, key suppliers were identified and qualified, process equipment was purchased and qualified, production documentation was established, quality control protocols were implemented based on MIL and ISO methodologies, and staff were hired and trained for the production facility.

RESULTS: The production facility became a world-leader in its class, with an output capability of thousands of components per year. The production facility generated product at 95+% component yields, and enabled consistent on-time delivery to the customer. In addition, since the production facility was not manufacturing to capacity, we carried out a sales and marketing initiative which resulted in the establishment of a second customer for the ionizing radiation component.
